Film regulation and the BBFC
1) Research the BBFC in more detail: what is the institution responsible for? How is it funded? What link does it have to government? This history of the BBFC page may help.
The institution is responsible for the national classification and censorship of films that are exhibited at cinemas and video works. It is funded through fees charged to those who submit films and video works for classification as it is a non-governmental organisation.
2) Read this BBFC guide to how films are rated. Summarise the process in 50 words.
The BBFC classifies content by consensus, with the Chief Executive, President and Vice Presidents taking final responsibility. The compliance officers watch films, DVDs and online content, often by themselves or in teams. They assess themes, language, violence and other issues, providing reports for age ratings. Difficult content is referred to senior management for review.
3) Read this BBFC section on landmark decisions. Why did The Dark Knight generate a large amount of media coverage regarding its certificate? Do you agree with the 12A certificate The Dark Knight was awarded?
4) What are the guidelines for a 12A certificate - Blinded By The Light's cinema certificate (it was rated 12 for its home video release)?
5) The BBFC website offers an explanation of every classification it makes and detailed case studies on selected titles. Look at the rating for Blinded By The Light and explain why it was given a 12A certificate for cinema release.
3) Read this BBFC section on landmark decisions. Why did The Dark Knight generate a large amount of media coverage regarding its certificate? Do you agree with the 12A certificate The Dark Knight was awarded?
The Dark Knight generated a large amount of media coverage regarding its certificate because the pulic thought that the violence was too strong ro be contained in the 12A category. I agree with the 12A certificate that it was rewarded because there was no emphasis on injuries and blood, it just shows the impression that there is violence.
4) What are the guidelines for a 12A certificate - Blinded By The Light's cinema certificate (it was rated 12 for its home video release)?
The guidelines for a 12A certificate are:
-Dangerous, anti-social behaviour should not be encouraged
-Weapons should not be glamorised
-Discriminatory language/behaviour should not be endorsed
-No glamorisation of misuse of drugs
-Moderate/strong language is permitted depending on the context of the situation
-There can be nudity but in sexual content, it should be brief and discreet
-There can be moderate violence, but not with a lot of detail
5) The BBFC website offers an explanation of every classification it makes and detailed case studies on selected titles. Look at the rating for Blinded By The Light and explain why it was given a 12A certificate for cinema release.
Blinded By The Light was given a 12A certificate because there's infrequent moderate bad language used. There's a scene where a man was attacked and it resulted in brief injury detail. Racism is not condoned.
