Lighting blog tasks

   1st image:

  1. There is low-key lighting in the image as there is a harsh light on the side of the woman's face which darkens the rest of her face,  creating a dark atmosphere.
  2. I think that the image has top lighting that is not too harsh as the light subtly emphasises the woman's bone structure where the highest points of her face are brighter and the deeper points on her face are darker.
  3. The overall darkness of this image conveys mystery which can also be demonstrated through the smoke from her cigarette as it is contrasting with the other colours of the image. The smoke around the woman is highlighted intentionally to enhance the ideas of secrecy and mystery as well as make the audience question the storyline .Perhaps, the smoke could indicate sadness as it contains a hue of blue and this colour typically connotes to sadness and despair.

  1. There is low-key lighting used in the image as most of the image is filled with darkness besides the woman's face, the top of her fingers and the wall beside her which seems to be reflecting the light source.
  2. I think that there is top lighting used here as the woman's facial features become prominent where her forehead, nose and cheekbones are highlighted but her eyes and cheeks are darkened.
  3. The darkness of this image portrays mystery as well as anticipation due to the woman looking up, creating an enigma code. This can also be conveyed from the hands that are visibly around her face which may create an action code as the audience doesn't know who's hands they are and makes the audience question what's going to happen next.

  1. There is high-key lighting used in this image as it is brighter overall and there seems to be more filler lights used. however, the image is monochrome as there isn't any colour besides black and white.
  2. I think that there is top lighting used in this image as the man's bone structure becomes prominent and creates harsh lines on his face.
  3. The overall clear contrast between darkness and light on the man's face conveys a sense of anger and revenge as the lighting highlights his furrowed brows along with the dark shadows on his eyes, creating an atmosphere of anger and intimidation.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           4th image:

  1. There is low-key lighting used in the image as most of the image is filled with darkness besides his face,  coat ,prop, rain and background.
  2. I think that there is top lighting is used here as it accentuates the man's features and facial expression which seems to be confusion . The top lighting is off-centred which darkens the left side of his face.
  3. The top lighting darkens the man's facial features which creates a sense of mystery and the angle of the man is a low shot so the man is perceived as powerful, intimidating and authoritative . This is evident through the fact that the man is wearing all black and sleek clothes which connotes to secrecy and perhaps criminality. The rain and the prop (gun) are also highlighted which adds to the intimidation and sense of mystery that the the audience is feeling.

  1. There is high-key lighting used in this image as almost everything is visible besides the back of the woman's head. There are more filler lights used for this brighter image .
  2. I think that there is front lighting used here as the lighting evenly distributes the perfect proportion of light and shadow on the woman's face which suggests that the light source is in front of her.
  3. The front/high-key lighting establishes an illuminating effect on the woman and therefore creates a harsh shadow behind her which emphasises her horrified facial expression.                                                                                                                                                                                                                              6th image: E:\My docs\My Pictures\Film Stills\18631_Bladerunner-4.jpg
  4. There is low-key lighting used in this image as most of the image is filled with darkness besides the faces of the man and woman and the window which is the light source.
  5. I think that there is front lighting used here as there are subtle shadows  on their faces and the light is even across their faces.
  6. The subtle shadows on their faces create a sense of secrecy as well as intimacy as the lighting is dark
    7th image:
    E:\My docs\My Pictures\Film Stills\clockwork1.jpg
  1. There is low-key lighting used in this image as nothing is really that visible besides the walls and the silhouettes.
  2. I think that there is back lighting used in this image as there is a bright light source coming from behind the people which creates silhouettes and long shadows of them on the floor.
  3. The people in the image being perceived as eerie figures by the audience creates an ominous feeling which might make the audience feel a sense of threat and tension due to the fact that there are multiple figures.
    8th image:

  1. There is low-key lighting used in this image as there is a harsh light on the woman's face which creates a dark shadow behind her.
  2. I think that there is side lighting used in this image as one side of the woman's face is bright while the other side has a shadow which darkens her features.
  3. The use of the lighting and dark shadows on her face creates a dramatic effect.
   9th image:
    E:\My docs\My Pictures\Film Stills\Joanofarc1.jpg
  1. There is low-key lighting used in the image as there is a harsh light on the man's face which creates a dark shadow on his neck and cheekbone.
  2. I think that there is top lighting used here as there are no harsh lines on the man's face and the lighting is even throughout is face while his neck area and cheekbone has shadows.
  3. This lighting emphasises his feeling of vulnerability as the dark shadow on his face highlights his feelings as it enhances his facial expression.
   10th image:E:\My docs\My Pictures\Film Stills\H_003_rgb.jpg
      1. There is low-key lighting used here as the image is mostly filled with darkness besides the person wearing a mask and the window.
2.I think that there is back lighting used here as the person with the mask is basically a silhouette with the background being brighter than him.
3.The effect of the lighting here creates a sense of intensity and entrapment as the figure is standing in the doorway.

    11th image:E:\My docs\My Pictures\Film Stills\double.jpg
      1. There is high-key lighting used here as the image is brighter overall with even light distribution.
       2. I think that there is top-lighting used in the image but not to harsh as the are subtle shadows on the deeper points on the man's face. There are more filler lights used.
3.This lighting is used to create an intimate atmosphere as there are very subtle shadows which makes the scene appear softer.
