Mise-en Scene blog tasks
1) C- The costume that the doll is wearing is childlike and colourful which contrasts to his dark and evil facial expression.Perhaps, by using bright and colourful clothes on the character, they want the audience to follow the stereotypes that they may think of when seeing this character.
L- There is low-key lighting shown in the poster with a subtle top lighting that accentuates its features, giving it a dark and intimidating aura. By using t op/side lighting, it darkens the deep/sunken points of the character's face (its eyes and edges of nose) however, it also highlights its glistening, bright almost reptile-like eyes as well as enhancing the furrowed eyebrows which creates an intense and abnormal atmosphere for the audience. The de-saturated lighting perfectly portrays the atmosphere to be filled with intensity, mystery and cooling thrill.
A-The actors facial expression seems to be filled with rage, revenge and anger. This is perfectly conveyed through the actor's eyebrows being furrowed, creating an image of anger and misery. However, the character's mouth is open with the edges curved up, almost trying not to smile which contradicts the ideas the audience gets with the furrowed eyebrows as he seems to be enjoying what's about to happen (action code).
M- The character's makeup is displayed to be that of a corpse as the colour of his skin is extremely pale, grey and looks inhumane as well as the outline of his eyes coloured red, suggesting lack of sleep and perhaps insanity because of the character's eyes bulging out which highly opposes the features of a child as a stereotypical child has full/plump skin with no wrinkles and redness around their eyes due to the fact that they're typically well-rested. The characters hair is bright orange, messy and has an uneven haircut which also contradicts the hair of a stereotypical child as they usually have neat and well-kept hair. Perhaps, they did this on purpose to make the audience question the character's life, how he ended up this way and, most importantly, whats going to happen next?
P- There are no props.
S- The setting seems to be in an extremely dark room where the character is looking at something/someone ( enigma code) but in this setting, there is pretty much nothing to look at besides the character. Perhaps, they did this in order to create an atmosphere of anticipation and mystery as the character is clearly looking at something with a bad intention which makes the audience question his next move as well lure the audience to watch as they have various questions running through their mind.
2)
I've chosen two scenes with different genres to compare
.The Expanse (TV series 2015)
.A Quiet Place (2018)
C- 'A Quiet Place' uses natures colours to portray recovery within the natural world however 'The Expanse' uses ultra-modern designs . These are used to easily distinguish between genres for these scenes and it becomes obvious that 'The Expanse' is sci-fi and 'A Quiet Place' is horror.
L- Although both scenes use low-key lighting,'A Quiet Place' uses it cleverly as it is used to convey fear and suspense of the unknown.Whereas, 'The Expanse' uses extremely artificial l ighting which emphasises the highly contrasting colours and demonstrates how foreign space can be to us.
P- Props are used in both 'The Expanse' and A Quiet Place' but in 'The Expanse', these props are portrayed to be positive as they are futuristic and vital for space travel whereas, in 'A Quiet Place', props are portrayed as a mechanism for survival, which is negative.
S- 'A Quiet Place' takes place in a provincial almost empty area in order to demonstrate the eerieness of the silence. However, 'The Expanse' uses the sleek, harsh and modern designs of the spacecrafts to convey the contrasting feelings of stress and seclusion in space.
